Internships are now a mandatory part of the engineering curriculum. While some may focus on gaining practical experience in an industry, a foreign internship in a university or a research lab is particularly helpful for students aiming for higher education. Although several programs like DAAD, MITACS, Charpak and NTU-India Connect are quite popular and well known, there are several programs which are not so popular. Here is a list of such internship programs.

1. ETH Zurich Summer Internship
The computer science department of ETH Zurich offers paid summer research internship. A list of projects is listed out on their site along with the names of professors. You can directly contact them and if your profile is of interest to them, then you may be interviewed. If you are lucky enough, you would get through. You can have a glance at the internship program here.
2. EPFL Summer Research Internship Program
The School of Computer and Communication Sciences provides internship opportunities in the summer to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students from Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics and other related disciplines are eligible to apply. Typically, students are a part of a large research project and the interns are paid a stipend to cover their living expenses during the stay.
For the Indian applicants only:
Deadline: 15 November
Decision On Acceptance: 15 December
Note: To be eligible for the internship, you should be enrolled in a bachelors or masters program.
There is also a Summer Research Program For Undergraduate Life Science Student. The deadline for this program is January 31, 2018.
3. Ecole Polytechnique International Internship Program
This foreign internship program gives an opportunity to carry out 3-6 months of internship at the top-ranked French university. The internship can be carried out for 3-6 months. The fields of internship range from streams like chemistry, physics, mechanics to applied mathematics. Mostly, the internships are focussed on sciences and focus less on the engineering aspects. However, I have known mechanical and chemical engineering students from my institute who got selected for certain engineering projects. So, one has to look for the projects and then mail the professor. The students selected for this internship program will get a cheap accommodation in CROUS and a monthly stipend of 550 Euros/month. You can also apply to Charpak for additional scholarships which I have already discussed in my previous posts.
One should apply for the project by early January or mid-February. The project list for the next summer is usually updated by the end of November. You can apply for the internship here.

6. KU Leuven Internship Program
Every year KU Leuven invites exceptional undergraduate and Master students for a research experience in the science departments for a short period. The application starts in December and closes around mid-January. You can find more about the program here. One can intern for 3-6 months. A modest stipend is provided for some internships. The intake can be as low as 5 students for the summer internship. The number of internship position varies year to year and subject to the floated projects by faculties.
KU Leuven is one the best universities in Europe. Currently, it ranks 47 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Located close to Brussels in Belgium, KU Leuven boasts of excellent faculties and research labs.
I will keep on updating this list as I am aware of internship opportunities in other countries. I hope this article is useful to you.
